Valentine’s Day and Maldivians

Most of the youth of the “100% Islamic” Maldives is about to celebrate yet another non-Islamic occasion: the Valentine’s Day.

But I wonder if we know what we are doing! I wonder if we know that celebrating such a day is simply imitating a pagan (thus non-Islamic) custom just like zombies or automatons!

Anyone with a little bit of historical knowledge will acknowledge that Valentine's Day began when the early Roman Catholic Church tried to Christianize an ancient pagan Roman holiday called Lupercalia. That celebration was a licentious festival that honored Lupercus, the hero-hunter of wolves.

This festival was extremely popular among the Roman people then, that the Church included it in their calendar and made it part of Christianity, hoping to retain their new parishioners and turn them from sexual licentiousness to morality

The name of this day was given after a saint who is believed to have been a Roman priest who was martyred on February 14th around 270 AD. The story behind how he became the patron saint of lovers remains a mystery:

"Part of the ancient ceremony entailed putting girls' names in a box and letting the boys draw them out. Couples would thus be paired off until the following year. The Church substituted saints' names for girls' names, in the hope that the participant would model his life after the saint whose name he drew.
"But by the 16th century, it was once again girls' names that ended up in the box. Eventually the custom of sending anonymous cards or messages to those one admired became the accepted way of celebrating St. Valentine's Day" (Helene Henderson and Sue Ellen Thompson, editors, Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary, "Valentine's Day," 2005, p. 576).
"However, the early Christian saint Valentine probably had nothing to do with the traditions later celebrated on his feast day; it is simply by his placement in the Christian calendar that his name became associated with it. Later, the word valentine may have been confused with the Norman French word galantine, meaning lover of women, as the g and v were often interchangeable in common pronunciation.
"In any case, February 14 gradually became a traditional date for exchanging love messages, and Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers" (Macmillan Profiles: Festivals and Holidays, 1999, p. 363).

As it has been the habit of Christians, mainly since St. Paul, to modify the Christianity by adding/deleting/changing various aspects of their religion, this addition of an extra day to celebrate, as opposed to what was given in the Bible, was brought about. This is still evident from what is still left of the original Bible.

Furthermore, this celebration has recently taken a new dimension, with the event being ‘taken over’ by the capitalist forces and heavily commercialised, just like the other occasions of Christianity (such as Christmas Day, Easter; both of which have direct pagan routes as well!!).

(Yes, the “true” Christianity, and Islam, which are two “beacons of light from the same source” as was famously proclaimed by Emperor Negas of Ethiopia (Emperor ‘Najashee’ of ‘Habash’ as we know him), is clear from such pagan routes. Thus sincere Christians find no difficulty in accepting such truth, with many of them accepting the truth of Muhammad(s.a.w) and accepting Islam, just like Emperor Negas did later on)

Any Muslim who is sincere to his/her faith (and thus remain ‘moderate’ and in the ‘main stream’) will acknowledge that Islam is not just a set of repeatable physical rituals, but rather a complete way of life, thus requiring its adherents to obey and submit to Almighty God’s terms in sincerity and peace.

This naturally implies the importance of ‘keeping our acts’ coherent with our faith in all aspects of our lives, at all times!

May Allah shower his blessings on you for letting us know what exactly this Valentine’s day is. It's Superb. May Allah Be Praised!

I’m sure most of us didn’t know the origins of this seemingly innocuous day – Valentines Day. This post puts this Valentine’s day in proper perspective, and Insha Allah brothers & sisters reading this post would think twice before immitating the rest of the world in “celebrating” this pagan and later Christianised
“Celebration”.

We Muslims cannot forget that we Muslims have just the 2 Eids for Celebrations ordained by Allah for Muslims and communicated by the Prophet-Pbuh. So really celebrating all these Western celebrations is to be avaoided. The Scholars would be most equipped to give a comprehensive treatment of this subject.

What we as laymen can do is to recall certain Ayats and Hadis that really points us in just one direction – That is to avoid immitating non-muslims in celebrating yheir celebrations.

In this spirit let me share some Hadis and Ayats with you.

Contemplate on them and then draw your conclusions. Is there any room for us Maldivian Muslims to follow these celebrations robotically? :-) NONE!

O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.
2-060.008
: Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.
060.009
: Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong.
3. 004.115
: If anyone contends with the Messenger even after guidance has been plainly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that becoming to men of Faith, We shall leave him in the path he has chosen, and land him in Hell,- what an evil refuge!

So a Muslim, reading these verses are on the alert and tries to find out what the Prophet Muhammad –Pbuh said regarding this matter; so as to lead his life according to Allahs will. Hadis leaves us in no doubt that Muslims are commanded to be distinctively different from the non-muslims.

Thus the Prophet - Pbuh said:

1.You will follow the ways of those nations who preceded you very closely; even if they entered a lizard's hole you would follow them into it. [Sunhanallah! How true these prophetic words have proved to be].
2.He who imitates a people is one of them.
3.Be different from the Jews and the Christians.
4.Be different from the disbelievers
5.Whoever imitates a people is one of them.

Now we see why a fundamental rule of Islamic jurispudence states that, "External resemblance results in real resemblance of the hearts."

Resembling the disbelievers is Satan's first step in leading the Muslims to behave and believe like them.

Dear bro/sis, lets all together help each other to turn to Allah & His Messenger. Allah Has been so Wonderful to us. Lets avoid adding to Allah’s Deen that He Perfected over 1400 years ago. Lets discard Valentine Days and All such Days from our MINDS.

May Allah Give us Success. Amin.

i found this thing on you tube where a person called that Muslim's blood turns cheap on valentines day which i wondered why just on one celebrated day. those who celebrate the day and are Muslims don't sin just on that day. most don't know about the day and the st.valentine and most think its celebrated by lovers. its apparently a day of celebrating love and joy not only with that significant other but with family and friends too... that's the reason why i find it stupid, why celebrate one day to show gratitude and love to all those people u love by giving roses and why not show that everyday... :s

So then its this day has no religious roots in its origins. I think makes it fit to celebrate as lovers day

No it HAS religious roots in its origin, as its origin is in Paganism. Paganism is "budhah alhukan kuraa" religion in other words. I guess it cant be more religious than that!

Some of the comments are just hilarious! Some people have such a hard time digesting the facts. Apparently "religious" festivals can be accepted as secular celebrations as long as illicit sex is involved. Secularism can be confusing, eh?

Yes, like most non-Islamic days of celebration, valentines day is used for commercialization and as an excuse to pursue your lusts. Despite all the effort though, nothing can beat the Islamic way of life. For us Muslims, everyday is a day to share our love and affection with our family and peers. And we do this sincerely too. We don't pretend to love by giving expensive. Beat that!
